Operational Excellence Program

How to improve on-time performance and schedule reliability during critical summer operations across a group of airlines?

Challenge

Pre-Covid in 2019, the air transport system reached its limits towards ensuring reliable on-time operations with many airlines struggling to meet customer expectations. The Lufthansa Group performed below market average operationally and was faced with a significant risk of losing passengers in the long term. As a countermeasure, an Operational Excellence program was set up across all airlines and functions in the Lufthansa Group.

Approach

Our Founder & Managing Partner led the program as internal manager over a period of 9 months:

  • Setup of a real-time performance dashboard also allowing for root cause analytics
  • Structured analysis of delay drives and development of improvement measures
  • Thorough implementation with focus on levers promising short-term effects
  • Establishment of a steering governance across airlines and functions
  • Continuous communication to both external (media) and internal (staff) stakeholders
